Frequently Asked Questions about Counseling and Coaching

  • What Type of Counseling Do You Do? - My emphasis is cognitive-behavioral therapy. This means that we discuss your thoughts, actions, and how they relate to each other. The work in therapy is goal oriented, meaning that we will work with small, measurable goals to achieve your desired results.

  • What Modes of Theraphy are Available? - I am available to do session in my office, over the telephone, or online. It all depends on what your particular needs are and what you're comfortable doing.

  • Do You Take Insurance? - It may be possible for you to receive reimbursement from your insurance company. PleaseClick here for more information.

  • Can You Prescribe Medication? - No, only a psychiatrist (someone with an M.D) can prescribe medication.

  • Can You Give IQ Tests? - No, only a psychologist (with a Ph.D) can perform those assessments.

  • Do You Work With Children? - My practice emphasis is teens and adults. I won't work with anyone younger than 15.

  • Will you refer to me a service that offers something you don't offer?- I am happy to do this for current clients. If you are not a client, then I'm sorry, I am unable to help, as I am not a referral service.

  • I'm a student working on a class assignment. Could you answer some questions I have for my paper?- I get this request often and am happy to help. Please send a copy of your questions, the intent of your paper, the deadline, and your professor's contact information to the mailing address to the left. Why mail and not email/phone? Please see my blog post here.

Payment Information

There are several methods that you can use to pay for counseling sessions:

  • Cash

  • Check

  • Credit Card : We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover. For phone/internet sessions, it is possible for us to email you a link so that you can pay with your credit card online.

  • Health Savings (HSA) & Flex Spending (FSA) Accounts : Many companies offer a health savings or flex spending account to be used for health care. These plans also tend to cover counseling/psychotherapy, and we can work with you to provide letters to your company showing that you are using the account for counseling (please understand that this will limit your confidentiality, as this allows your company to know that you are in counseling, though paying this way doesn't provide details of the therapy provided).

  • Insurance : Congress passed 2008 Mental Health Parity (MHP) Act back in October 2008. This will become law effective October 3rd, 2009. This law requires that all employers with 51 or more employees provide parity coverage for Mental nerves, Alcohol and Drug abuse(MNAD) benefits in their health insurance plans. Your insurance plan can not place limits on number of visits and allowed charges per visit as they have done in the past. While we have chosen not to participate in any Behavioral Health Networks, we can provide services as an out-of-network provider. This means that we can provide you with a "superbill" (a receipt for the insurance company) that shows that you have paid for counseling services and are seeking reimbursement from your insurance provider. You can then file a claim and reimbursement request with your insurance company. This means that you are responsible for payment of sessions at each session; whether or not you get reimbursed (and the amount of reimbursement) is dependent on your insurance plan and is between you and your insurance company. Also, understand that using your insurance means you will be diagnosed with a mental disorder, as this is a requirement for all insurance companies.

* Payment for services is due at each session. You are responsible for payment of services.
* We cannot accept Medicare/Medicaid or Tricare (previously known as Champus).
